Our Story
Joseph Focarino founded Nextgen Electric in 2010, after a decade in the field with IBEW Local 164.
He entered the trade at twenty, as an apprentice with Belgiovine Electric. Soon after, he was accepted into the IBEW Local 164 apprenticeship program, where he completed his on-the-job training hours and classroom requirements. In the years that followed, he worked on and then managed installations for data centers, high-rise buildings, tunnels, rail systems, stadiums, Port Authority facilities, government buildings, and municipal projects — the kind of complex, heavily inspected work that leaves no room for shortcuts.
That experience shaped the company he built. Industrial facilities, public projects, and critical systems are not work Nextgen Electric expanded into later. They are where it started.
Today Joseph leads a team of skilled electricians who hold to the same standards he learned in the field.
What We Do
Our work falls into three areas:
Electrical construction. Ground-up commercial and industrial projects, tenant fit-outs, renovations, and building additions — including preconstruction planning and value engineering before the work begins. We handle complete electrical systems from service entrance to final trim, and we coordinate with general contractors, construction managers, and other trades to keep electrical from becoming the schedule constraint.
Service and maintenance. Troubleshooting and repair, panel and service upgrades, and preventive maintenance programs for facilities where downtime is expensive. We answer emergency calls around the clock.
Specialty systems. Fire alarm design, installation, service, and monitoring; security cameras, access control, and structured cabling; standby generators; and EV charging infrastructure including Level 3 DC fast charging sites.
Certifications & Credentials

- SBE Certified — a Small Business Enterprise, helping agencies and prime contractors meet participation goals
- SDA Prequalified — eligible for NJ Schools Development Authority school construction projects
- PSE&G Trade Ally — an approved contractor in PSE&G’s energy efficiency programs, allowing us to bring utility incentives directly to our customers’ projects

How We Work
- We tell you what you actually need. Sometimes that means recommending a repair instead of a replacement, or the smaller generator, or Level 2 charging instead of Level 3. A recommendation that costs us money today is what earns the next ten years of work.
- We handle the paperwork. Permits, inspections, utility coordination, certified payroll, certificates of insurance, and utility incentive applications — supplied without being chased.
- We work around your operations. Nights, weekends, and phased work in occupied buildings, because a production line or a storefront cannot stop for our convenience.
- We stay after handover. The company that built your system can service it.
Our Reputation
Our customers have rated us 4.9 stars across more than 60 Google reviews, and much of our work comes from repeat clients and referrals from general contractors we have worked alongside for years. Read our reviews.
Service Area
We serve Essex, Morris, Passaic, and Bergen counties and work throughout New Jersey, including Fairfield, West Caldwell, Montclair, Wayne, Livingston, Parsippany, Morristown, Paramus, Newark, Belleville, Bloomfield, Montville, and Hackensack.
